Dr. Joseph Yackley Bio
Dr. Joseph Yackley is a diplomat with the U.S. Department of State and currently teaching as a Rusk fellow at Georgetown University’s Institute for the Study of Diplomacy. Since joining the State Department in 2013, Joe has worked as a human rights officer in Tunisia, a consular officer in Ankara, an Iran Watcher in Istanbul, and an intelligence analyst in the Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research. Before joining the State Department, he spent a decade in Europe and the Middle East as a journalist, consultant, and academic, receiving fellowships from the Robert Bosch Foundation, the International Center for Journalists, and the Fulbright Commissions in Egypt and Turkey. Joe holds a PhD in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from the University of Chicago where his dissertation on the political economy of sovereign bankruptcy in 19th century Egypt and the Ottoman Empire is still used to treat acute cases of insomnia. He also holds MA degrees in Middle Eastern Studies and Public Policy from the University of Chicago along with a BA in Philosophy from Northwestern University. He is a co-author of a book on international political risk, entitled "Risk Rules: How Local Politics Threaten the Global Economy.
